Head question

We just burnt a head gasket which in case knocked a chunk out of the head right in the center of between cylender 3 and 5( it was a nitrous explosion). I have herd of people having the head built up and then milled down and being able to be used again is that possible, or is it time to scratch up some dough to get some new heads? Our heads our open chamber aluminum heads.

By the way thanks Top Sportsman racer for you help with wiring up the rpm activator we ran our first 4 saturday the run before we burnt the head up.

Re: Head question

If you can't find an experienced shop in your area that preheats the head prior to tig (heliarc) welding it then I will give you the number for Terry Near's shop, and you can ship it to Columbus (Dublin) Ohio, and he will ship it back to you after he makes the repair. Terry is certified to weld aircraft parts (the one the FAA allow to be welded) and has many jigs for welding Alcohol and Nitro class aluminum blocks and heads back together. He is one of the few that can weld a main web without it moving more than a few fractions of a thousands of an inch (usually only one to three ten thousands). He can also either just rough machine the repair leaving enough for your favorite engine shop to finish or he can finish machine it so that you can't even tell the head was ever repaired.

As long as these are quality heads and not a set from one of the companies selling the cheapest set out there you won't have a problem (I don't bash any companies products, but there is one company using a lesser quality alloy of aluminum).

Re: Head question

Where in South Carolina are you located? Fulton Competition (Spartanburg) does some of the best head repairs out there for TONS of racers. You don't have to be an engine customer or anything like that.

If it's torched between cylinders, Gene should be able to weld it up, fix the chambers, and mill the head. The way that they do the repairs leaves the head damn strong.

Give them a call at the shop: (864) 583-3089

Re: Head question

We've done this repair many times ...if none of the above contacts work out give me a call at 724-639-9924 and we can fix it for you

A head properly repaired like this should not give any future problems
Be sure and check the block at that location to make sure it's not low
